Description:

JFK Inscribed "Why England Slept" to Close Friend, "it is pregnant with significance as are you"

An uncommonly inscribed copy of John F. Kennedy's first book, "Why England Slept", made out to good friend and long-term neighbor, Nancy Tenney Lloyd. New York: Wilfred Funk, Inc., 1940. Octavo, xxx, 252pp. Inscribed by Kennedy on the front free end page, "For Tenn from Ken!" Additionally inscribed by Kennedy on the rear pastedown, "Ten: Its my hope that this book will interest you - as it is pregnant with significance as are you." The book is a sixth printing, October 1940, but likely inscribed in 1943 when Nancy was pregnant with her first child, who was to be the godchild of Kennedy's sister, Kathleen "Kick" Kennedy. Nancy has also penned her name "Nancy Lloyd" on the front pastedown. Publisher's red cloth binding with a sketch of a lion on the front. Titling at the spine. The volume lacks a dustjacket. With light wear and rubbing to the cover edges and minor soiling to the covers. Light toning to internal pages. Sound binding. Boldly signed by Kennedy. Provenance: John F. Kennedy to Nancy Tenney Lloyd (later Nancy Tenney Coleman); by descent in the family.

Kennedy's first book, "Why England Slept", was published the year he graduated from Harvard. Nancy Tenney Lloyd Coleman had been a long-time neighbor to the Kennedys at their Hyannis Port residence and was one of Kathleen Kennedy's closest friends. In the recently published "White House by the Sea", Tenney described herself as "I was like one of the [Kennedy] children." Kick and Nancy referred to each other as "Ken and Ten", and it is clear Jack Kennedy also picked up the nickname. At the time, Nancy was married to Navy pilot Demarest Lloyd, Jr. and was expecting her first child, Tangley C. Lloyd. This volume was likely inscribed during Kennedy's service in the Naval Reserve during World War II and just prior to his heroic command of PT-109. in August 1943. Tangley Lloyd was born in April 1944, and tragically her father would be killed in action just a few months later at the Battle of Saipan. Nancy would go on to marry Robert S. Coleman in 1947 and raise a family of six children in Greenwich, Connecticut, but she remained in touch with the Kennedy family, particularly Rose Kennedy in her later years.
