The state funeral of John F. Kennedy,  took place in Washington D.C. during the three days that followed his assassination on Friday, November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas. The body of President Kennedy was brought back to Washington soon after his death and was placed in the East Room of the White House for 24 hours.  On the Sunday after the assassination, his flag-draped casket was carried on a horse-drawn caisson to the U.S. Capitol to lie in state.

  1. Several elements of the state funeral paid tribute to Kennedy's service in the Navy during World War II. They included a member of the Navy bearing the Presidential flag, The playing of the Navy Hymn "Eternal Father, Strong to Save", and the Naval Academy Glee club performing at the White House. On Sunday afternoon about 300,000 people watched a horse-drawn caisson bearing the casket of Kennedy moved down the White House drive on the way to St. Matthew's Cathedral.

This wonderful set of 34 large original photos personally owned by Kennedy's White House photographer, Cecil Stoughton, where taken during those few days, and include numerous images from the East Room with Kennedy's casket draped with the American flag, and when his flag-draped casket was carried on a horse-drawn caisson to the U.S. Capitol to lie in state. 6. The flag-draped casket shown being carried out of the East room, by both Navy and other military personal, existing the building.

    7. Numerous pictures of President Kennedy's draped casket being carried on a horse-drawn caisson. Several show Jackie in the background with both John Jr. and Caroline.

Jacqueline Kennedy had no regrets about refusing to take the blood-stained pink Chanel suit off after the assassination of her husband; her only regret was that she had washed the blood off her face before Johnson was sworn in. When Jacqueline Kennedy finally removed her suit the following morning, her maid folded it and placed it in a box. Some days after the assassination this box was dispatched to Kennedy's mother, Janet Lee Auchincloss, who wrote "November 22nd 1963" on the top of the box and stored it in her attic. Eventually the box was given to the National Archives in Maryland, together with an unsigned note bearing the Auchincloss letterhead stationery. The note read: "Jackie's suit and bag worn Nov. 22, 1963". The suit, which was never cleaned, is kept out of public view in "an acid-free container in a windowless room ... the precise location is kept secret.

A phenomenal set of photos during one of the very somber periods of our Country. These photos were taken by Kennedy's personal White House photographer and bear his unique numbering system on verso, with reference to the original negatives, these were his own file examples.
