Description:

Kennedy John

JFK Assassination Rare Cardinal Cushing Signed Prayer

A Prayer program signed by Richard Cardinal Cushing (1895-1970), the family friend of 35th U.S. President John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) and Archbishop of Boston. Cushing signed it as "Richard Cardinal Cushing" along the bottom of the front cover. Expected light wear including a few scuffs to the back page, else near fine. 12mo.

The pamphlet contains the prayer and remarks delivered by Archbishop Cushing on May 29, 1964 at a luncheon celebrating the First Day of Issue launch of the 5 cent John F. Kennedy commemorative stamp. This was a significant date; it would have been JFK's 47th birthday. The design of the stamp, which features a portrait of JFK on the right panel and an illustration of the Eternal Flame at his gravesite on the left panel, had been approved by former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy.

Archbishop Cushing's comments from the prayer read in part: "May the torch pictured on this stamp, burning always on the little mound in Arlington, be the symbol of a new light that will illumine the days ahead and dispel all those evil things which threaten the life of man, even as they took the life of our late President…" (p. 2).

Richard Cushing served as the Archbishop of Boston between 1944-1970, and was appointed a Cardinal after 1958. A Kennedy family friend who baptized many of the Kennedy children, he officiated at John and Jackie's 1953 wedding, read an invocation at the 1961 inauguration, and later conducted numerous televised funeral masses for the slain president in Washington, D.C. and Boston.
