Dr. Malcolm O. Perry (1929-2009) was one of the first doctors to treat 35th U.S. President John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) in the Parkland Memorial Hospital emergency room on November 22, 1963. He also assisted in the surgery of primary suspect Lee Harvey Oswald (1939-1963) on November 24, 1963. Dr. Perry was thus uniquely situated to observe and treat the lethal injuries of both men. He was asked to recollect those traumatic incidents some twenty years later by a Kentucky school teacher named Roy Hensel.

The lot includes:

1. 2pp letter discussing what Dr. Perry observed in the emergency room.

Dr. Perry wrote in part:

"As you may have noticed I don't give interviews regarding those tragic events of November 1963, and rarely comment on that episode, but I infer from what you said that this is an important issue to your students…

That Friday Dr. Ronald Jones and I…were notified that the President had been shot and they were on their way to Parkland so Dr. Jones and I went immediately to the emergency room and just after Mr. Kennedy was brought in to Emergency Room 1 and Governor Connally into Emergency Room 2. Assessment showed that Mr. Kennedy was agonal, but he was still breathing and had a pulse but no obtainable blood pressure…I could see the bullet hole in the neck and some injury to the back of his head so we immediately began a tracheostomy to acquire satisfactory airway…toward the end of the tracheostomy…Mr. Kennedy arrested and we initiated cardiac massage. The electrocardiogram was a straight line and although we attempted to resuscitate him and recover a heartbeat it was not possible…

[Resuscitation] would not be possible today either, because of the severity of the brain damage to the rear part of the President's brain…

On Sunday morning I operated on Mr. Oswald and we were unable to save him because of the extensive damage…"

On November 22nd, Dr. Perry had assisted inserting a breathing tube into the president's neck wound, and later, relieved one of his colleagues and undertook cardiac massage. The particulars of Dr. Perry's letter coincide with statements in his original testimony given before the Warren Commission on March 25, 1964.

Dr. Perry also assisted in the emergency operation of Lee Harvey Oswald on November 24th. He was tasked with cardiac massage and defibrillation efforts, and applied finger pressure to stem profuse aortic bleeding. Despite the doctors' best efforts, Oswald died less than 90 minutes after being shot by Jack Ruby at point-blank range.
