James Garfield Signed Check as President, One of Only Two Known, Ex-Sang
Partly Printed Document Signed, “J.A. Garfield”, as President, Washington, D.C., June 16, 1881, 1 p., 8” x 3.25”. Neatly inlaid, clean, virtually invisible slit cancellations, else Very Fine. Ex-Philip D. Sang Collection, Christie’s, 1999.
Extremely rare presidential check. Typographical borders and a vignette image of Riggs Bank, with a horse-drawn carriage outside the imposing entrance. An order on the back of Riggs and Company payable to Tyssowski Bros. for $15.50.
We are aware of only a single other example of a Garfield presidential check. Sold for nearly $10,000 over twenty years ago.
