Jackie Robinson signed check for Student Emergency Fund, PSA/DNA slabbed

PSA/DNA slabbed check signed by American Baseball Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson (1919-1972) as "Jackie Robinson" in blue ball point pen on the payee line. Also signed by civil rights advocate Marian Bruce Logan (1920-1993) as "Marian B. Logan" on the second payee line. Check No. 108, issued from Chase Manhattan Bank of New York, New York on February 27, 1961, directed agents to pay the "Great Northern Offset Printing Corp." $13.91. The yellow striped check with "Student Emergency Fund" letterhead bears perforated and stamped cancellation marks recto and verso. Graded by PSA/DNA as “EX 5”. The check measures 8.25" x 3.125" while the slab measures 12.5" x 5.5".

Robinson's post baseball career included sports commentating, acting, politics, and philanthropy. Along with his colleague Marian B. Logan, Robinson contributed to the Student Emergency Fund, a charity which helped black students with tuition and college fees. The Student Emergency Fund even provided books and magazines to protestors at sit-ins.

Jackie Robinson was the first black man to play professional baseball on a mixed race team. He played second baseman for the Brooklyn Dodgers between 1947-1956, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame 1 year before signing this check, in 1962.

Marian B. Logan was one of the first black Northern activists to become involved in the Civil Rights Movement. An expert fundraiser, Logan was a member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and befriended Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
