Jack Kerouac's Typewriter, Used to Write "Vanity of Duluoz", His Last typewriter used.


Jack Kerouac's Personal Smith-Corona Typewriter which he used to compose and type "Vanity of Duluoz", written in 1967 and published in 1968. In good, used condition with the 1) original typewriter cover, 2) the original typewriter handbook, 3) the original purchase receipt, 4) the original typewriter ribbon and even the original coffee stains (see below)! Christie's sold a typewriter in 2010, which was formerly the claimant to being the last typewriter he bought, though our paperwork clearly diputes this claim. It fetched well over $20,000!


Provenance: The piece will be accompanied by an estate certification signed by John Shen-Sampas, executer of the Kerouac Estate by descent. John Shen-Sampas is the son of John Sampas, who was the brother-in-law of Jack Kerouac, and the brother of Stella Kerouac, Jack's wife, AND Accompanied by the following provenance:


  1. Photocopies of letters sent to his agent Sterling Lord,  "Sterling", and "John" (John Holmes) just prior to the purchase of the typewriter describing his need to compose his novel, the state of his life, and the proposed writing and typing of "Duluoz"


  1. Another photocopied letter dated in May 22, 1967, in which Jack specifically identifies the purchase of his "new" typewriter ("Viola my new typewriter, a re-conditioned Smith-Corona), to "make a concrete contractual deadline with publishers … from whom I borrowed $4,000 last November … No kidding around. Yes my novel is finished …"


  1. The original purchase receipt for the Smith Corona typewriter, dated "May 19, 1967", and a photocopy of his signed check to purchase the typewriter dated "May 19, 1967".


  1. The original Smith Corona handbooks for the typewriter.


"Vanity of the Duluoz" was published in 1968. It would be the last novel published in his lifetime. A magnificent piece of Jack Kerouac history with impeccable provenance.



This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.

We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
