Description:

Jack Kerouac Signed Check to the IRS in 1960

A check fully engrossed by influential American writer Jack Kerouac (1922-1969) and signed by him as "Jack Kerouac" on the payee line. Check no. 343 in the amount of $1,141.25 is paid to the order of "Internal Revenue Service" and measures 6.25" x 2.75". Dated December 28, 1960 and issued from the Security National Bank in Northport, New York. Kerouac's printed name appears at upper left above that of his mother, Gabrielle-Ange Lévesque Kerouac (1895-1973). With Internal Revenue Service stamps and notations at recto and verso. Usual bank cancellation stamps and perforations. Rust from previous paper clip at top left corner; light folds; minor scattered soiling; else, in fine condition.

Kerouac's payment to the IRS was likely related to an ongoing lawsuit brought against him by his second wife, Joan Haverty Kerouac (1931-1990), for child support of their only child, Jan Kerouac (1952-1996). Joan Haverty met Jack Kerouac in 1950 and they married two weeks later. The marriage lasted only eight months, during which Joan became pregnant with Jan, and the couple separated before Jan was born. For many years, Jack denied paternity and went to court to avoid paying child support. He met his daughter for the first time when she was 10, after taking a paternity test that proved he was her father.
