Description:

Jack Johnson, 1st Black World Heavyweight Boxing Champion, Signature in Handsome Display

A paper fragment signed and inscribed in pencil by Jack Johnson (1878-1946), the first black heavyweight boxing champion of the world in 1908, as "Jack Johnson / Former Champion." The signature is displayed beneath a black and white image of Johnson, in orthodox boxing stance, posing in a gym. The paper fragment is unevenly toned, and there are remnants of old tape in the bottom two corners. The sight size of the clip is 3.5" x 1.125." Else very good to near fine, and boldly delineated. Matted and displayed behind glass in a sleek silver-toned frame. Not examined out of the frame. Framed overall: 9.75" x 12.875" x .875."

Jack Johnson, nicknamed the "Galveston Giant," measured over 6 feet tall, with a boxing reach surpassing that length. In 1903, Johnson became the titleholder of the "World Colored Heavyweight Championship," and five years later, he won the world heavyweight boxing championship in Sydney, Australia, becoming the first black champion ever. Johnson's victory was a milestone in sports history, but it also became a racial flashpoint. Johnson defended his title against former white world heavyweight boxing champion James J. Jeffries in a July 4, 1910 bout touted as the "Fight of the Century." Jeffries hoped to restore the title to whites, proving their superiority over blacks. Johnson easily won the fight after 15 rounds. The upset of Jeffries, the "Great White Hope," prompted nationwide race riots. Johnson's boxing record speaks for itself: he won 72 fights out of a total of 95.
