Description:

J.G. Whittier Letter Tipped into Autograph "Bible", Madigan's Word Shadows

A limited Autograph Edition hardcover copy of Thomas F. Madigan's Word Shadows of the Great: The Lure of Autograph Collecting (New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1930), #142 of 150, in which a letter, fully engrossed and signed by John Greenleaf Whittier, is tipped into one of the front loose endpapers. It is beautifully signed by Whittier as "John G Whittier" at lower right. Expected light paper folds. A blind embossed notary public seal affects the lower left corner. The paper sheet is hinged at left and measures 5" x 7.5".

Whittier's 65+ word response to a fan, written in Amesbury, Massachusetts, is dated 1881, and reads in part: "In answer to thy query or to my feeling in regard to the brute creature. I would say that I have always been on the right side, + I have written for the paper, and have been a supporter of the Society for the protection of Dumb animals. I have written no poem on the subject."

Madigan's Word Shadows has been considered an authoritative volume on autograph collecting for almost 100 years. This volume also contains a "Certificate of Genuineness" that was signed by the author as "Ths. F. Madigan" on April 10, 1930, and cosigned by a New York notary public. The book has blue boards and a gilt-embossed spine, with a stylized scroll decorating the front cover. Light overall toning to the deckled pages, but otherwise clean and crisp. Expected surface wear to the covers, including light grime to the spine. Else very good to near fine. 300pp. 8vo.

John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892) was a Quaker poet and abolitionist. Over his 50-year-long literary career, he produced many nostalgic sketches of New England, and influenced public opinion through numerous anti-slavery works.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
