Description:

Hugh S. Legaré Recommends VP to "very first Harrison & Tyler meeting"

2pp, measuring 7.75" x 9.75", Charleston, dated May 12, 1841. Signed "H.S. Legaré" and addressed to Hon. John Bell. Legaré recommends an acquaintance who wishes to find a military assignment for his son. Reading in part:

"The object of these lines is to present to you & to recommend to your kindest consideration Dr. Wilkinson of this city, who wishes to obtain for a son a place at West Point, or a midshipman's warrant. Dr. Wilkinson's manners & conversation will sufficiently attest that he belongs to the most respectable class of our community, but I must mention to you what he will not, as a claim upon your particular attention. He was one of the vice presidents of the very first Harrison & Tyler meeting called in South Carolina, or indeed in any part of the extreme South, & has been one of the few who have stood by us in the worst of times…" The letter has flattened mail folds, edge toning, and minor spots of soiling. Tape is present at the left edge. Boldly signed.

Hugh Swinton Legaré (1797-1843) was a lawyer and politician who served as 16th U.S. Attorney General and Acting U.S. Secretary of State under President John Tyler. Tyler was selected in 1839 as the Whig compromise nominee for vice president on the ticket with William Henry Harrison. They won the election and Harrison was inaugurated on March 4, 1841. However, he developed pneumonia shortly after the inauguration and died a few weeks later on April 4, making Tyler the new president.
