Description:

Gates Horatio

Horatio Gates (1727-1806) American Revolutionary War Major General ALS to unnamed recipient dated August 9, 1799 from Rose Hill, his estate in New York.

Gates writes about his apparent frustration with failure to receive letters from Mr. O'Neal and encloses letters to which he hopes to have the recipient wait for replies in "Frederick Town" and "Hagar's Town." He also mentioned that he had heard from Mr. Farquharr that Mr. Richard Carson Jr was somewhat better. He sends regards from Mary (his second wife from 1786, Mary Valens of Liverpool).

Gates was born in England and was a professional soldier sercing with a rank of Major in the British Army (1745-1769.) At the outset of the Revolution, Washington saw Gates as one of the few officers at his disposal and caused Congress to name him Adjuct General of the Continental Army and a Brigidier General. In 1776, he was made a Major General replacing Gerneal John Sullivan who left to defend Long Islandn with General Israel Putnam.

Gates led the Army in the defeat of General Bourgoyne at Saratoga, although Arnold is generally credited with the decisive action. Gates thereafter was at odds with Washington. Gates was asked by Congress to head the Board of War, placing him as Washington's subordinant and civilian superior. Gates was involved in movements against Washington, but later withdrew from the Board of War and apologized formally to Washington. Gates was next placed in charge of the Southern Department at Camden, he was defeated in 1780. A Board of Inquiry was called, but supporters repealed the Inquiry. Although implicated in the Newburgh Conspiracy in 1783 by the Army against Congress, Gate's actions are in historical dispute.
