Description:

Hoover Herbert

Herbert Hoover signed handsome portrait envelope, essentially a signed photo!

6.5" x 3.625" campaign envelope signed by presidential incumbent Herbert Hoover (1874-1964) as "Herbert Hoover." The bold and dark signature appears to the right of a round black and white image of Hoover and his reelection slogan "Hoover for President." Envelope has a typed Arena, New York address and handwritten forwarding address in Indianapolis, Indiana. The autographed envelope was postmarked from Washington, DC on November 8, 1932 and bears a single cancelled purple 3 cent George Washington stamp. In very good to near fine condition, with toning and light expected wear.

Sitting president Herbert Hoover unsuccessfully ran for a second term in 1932. In fact, he had lost the presidential election to Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945) just 3 days before this envelope was posted. The Republican Hoover won only 39.7% of the Electoral College vote to Democratic Roosevelt's 56.9%. Hoover's administration was deeply unpopular, and he was blamed for governmental mismanagement during the deepening financial crisis.

Hoover was a mining industrialist and life-long humanitarian who gained his first political experience as Director of the U.S. Food Administration and, between 1921-1928, 3rd U.S. Secretary of Commerce. After a disastrous single presidential term, Hoover was appointed to head post-World War II fact-finding and aid-giving commissions. This later political involvement rehabilitated Hoover’s image.
