Description:

Henry Lee ALS Discussing Plans to Build a Canal

4pp of a bifolium, measuring 7.5" x 9.25", Richmond, dated August 13, 1794. Signed "Henry Lee" and addressed to an unknown recipient, regarding a proposal to build a canal. With flattened mail folds and light toning and foxing. Ink bleed-through throughout, but boldly signed. Overall very good.

In part:
"…I enclose a proposition which if accepted will give to you the important water site near this city. To describe the situation & the capacity is unnecessary, for if the object commands your attention you had better send hither a compellent judge to view & report before contract. I have told Col. Harvie that the second ought not to be made until the contract is completed & that the last payment must be postponed one year from thence…The gentleman to whom he has leased a part of the property for 15 years is from Massachusetts & connected with some merchants in Boston & Baltimore I understand. His name is Charles R. Arthur, he is a wealthy man by character & seems to be amicable & industrious. He is now in Philada. I believe…The canal will cost Mr. Harvey £2500 & the buildings he is to erect for Mr. Arthur will require £3000 all cash…"

Henry Lee III (1756-1818) was the ninth Governor of Virginia and the father of Confederate general Robert E. Lee. His valuable service and guerrilla warfare tactics as a cavalry officer during the American Revolution earned him the nickname "Light-Horse Harry". He served as a representative for Virginia in Congress and famously gave a stirring eulogy for George Washington at the President's funeral on December 26, 1799. Lee retired from public service in 1801 and moved his family to Stratford Hall in Westmoreland County, Virginia. The family finally moved to Alexandria, VA in 1810.
