Description:

Henry Heimlich Signed Early Heimlich Maneuver Broadside, Still Trademark-Pending!

An early broadside showing how to perform the Heimlich Maneuver on food-choking victims, signed and inscribed by Henry Heimlich (1920-2016) as "To Jerry Shoemaker / Best wishes, / Henry Heimlich" near the right edge. The Broadside with colorful illustrations and step-by-step instructions was published by Edumed, Inc. in 1976 and was distributed for posting by the Cincinnati Board of Health and Office of Health Education. Expected wear commensurate with age and probable actual use, including slightly cropped upper corners, moderate wrinkles and chipped edges mostly confined to the lower right corner, and isolated stains and adhesive residue. Else very good to near fine. 8.5" x 11."

Although Henry Heimlich had discussed the ideas behind his life-saving eponymous maneuver as early as June 1974, the technique was not formally described until 1975, in articles published in two medical journals. Thus this early broadside uses the term "Heimlich Maneuver" only with an asterisk, meaning a trademark was still pending at the time of printing. Trademark status for the Heimlich Maneuver was filed in August 1976 and was registered in January 1978.

The Heimlich Maneuver was widely implemented by both the American Red Cross and American Heart Association as a primary first aid technique to clear victims' obstructed airways between 1976 and 2005. Now, other methods are also acknowledged, including back blows and chest thrusts. The term Heimlich Maneuver is more commonly known today as "abdominal thrusts."
