Washington George 1732 - 1799 George Washington Display with superb provenance! His signature, his hair, a swatch of his cloak, and a gold and silver threaded piece of his uniform's woven braid.

Revolutionary War-date signature of George Washington matted with an engraved portrait of a standing Washington from the Gilbert Stuart painting, a copious lock of Washington's hair, a swatch of his cloak, and piece of his uniform braid. Overall size, 15.5" x 13.5".

(1) Conclusion of a Manuscript Letter Signed "G:•_ Washington," 1 page, 6" x 3.5". Beneath words in unknown hand "I am Sir Your most obed:nt." Beneath the clear bold signature in another hand: "The Signature of the Father of his Country was made / in July 1778. - / Portsmouth April 1818-" Signed in pencil "Joseph T. Canon."

(2) Copious lock of George Washington's hair, perhaps 30 strands. The first owner was most probably Eleanor Parke-Custis, Martha Washington's granddaughter who was adopted by Gen. Washington. From the Custis-Powell family; Col. Levin Powell was a close friend of Gen. Washington. Certification by Charles Hamilton.

(3) 0.5" x 0.5" piece of General Washington's cloak. Ex-James D. Julia Auction, February 5, 2010.

(4) 1.5" x 0.5" piece of woven braid from Gen. Washington's uniform, gold and silver threads. With photocopy of envelope written on front "Piece of braid / from / George Washington's / Uniform." On back flap, also in unknown hand, in block letters, "Robt. E. Lee Lewis Jr."

Robert E. Lee Lewis (1903-1983) was a blood relative of both George and Martha Washington. He was a gr-gr-gr grandson of George Washington's sister Elizabeth (Betty) Washington who married Col. Fielding Lewis. He was a gr-gr-gr-gr grandson of Martha Washington, a direct descendant of her son John Parke Custis and his daughter Eleanor Parke Custis. Ex-Norman W.
