Description:

George III DS Re: Transfer of "India Stock" to Merchant during Wartime, with Possible Jewish Connections

1p document signed by King George III (1738-1820) as "George R." at top. Signed at the Court of St. James's in London, England on November 18, 1800. The enormous royal signature measures 3.25" x 1.75" alone. Also counter-signed by William Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland (1738-1809), then serving as Home Secretary, as "Portland" verso along bottom center. Partly handwritten and partly printed on laid watermarked cream paper with a handsome embossed paper seal at upper right. Several areas of red wax seal residue. Expected paper folds, and a few minor chipped edges and closed tears. Scattered stains and edge darkening. Else near fine. 7.875" x 11.375". Accompanied by an early print of George III after Hicks featuring the king's facsimile signature.

The document authorized the "Transfer of £500 Capital India Stock, from the name of Samuel Fan Moses Mendes Da Costa of Amsterdam" to A.D. Teisceira, so that the latter could invest it "in the produce of Our West India Colonies:…" The body of the document refers to various pieces of legislation passed between 1792-1798 which prevented British citizens or foreign nationals from enriching foreign governments, particularly those of France, Switzerland, and the United Provinces, or Netherlands. Such legislation protected British economic interests as the Napoleonic Wars dragged on.

Both parties in this document possibly had connections to Sephardic Jewish merchants and bankers originally from the Iberian Peninsula. The seller in our document--Samuel Fan Moses Mendes Da Costa--may have been related to Moses Mendes Da Costa (died 1747), an influential eighteenth-century Jewish banker. The buyer in our document--A.D. Teisceira (probably an anglicization of Teixeira)--could have also been Jewish, as Jewish investors with that surname were linked to substantial investment in East India stock after the early 1700s.
