Description:

George B. Cheever, Abolitionist, Celebrates "the sacred cause"

1p autograph quotation inscribed overall by American minister George B. Cheever (1807-1890), and signed by him as "George B. Cheever" near bottom. Written in New York City on July 9, 1860. On cream laid paper. The slightest of edge darkening and isolated minor foxing, else near fine. 6.75" x 8.75".

In full, with unchanged spelling and punctuation: "How true and beautiful and noble is the preceding sentiment! And in the same way it may be safely asserted that it is a greater privilege to live at such a day and in such a country as ours, and be thrown into the midst of such a dreadful conflict against the slavery of an outcast downtrodden race, and to endure reproach and suffering, if need be, on their behalf, and for their deliverance than to have been born in the most peaceful country and carried through life in the bosom of the happiest race ever known on earth. Certainly, if we look to the Saviour, and draw our inspiration and our life in this sacred cause from Him, we have presented to as in the most natural and legitimate way (and not without great compensations for our trials by the way) the benediction of Christ through the Apostle, to the few and faithful early disciples, for unto you it is given, on the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake. George B. Cheever New York July 9: 1860".

A Bowdoin College-educated Protestant minister, Cheever became one of the most controversial intellectuals of the mid-nineteenth-century. He debated the most sensational social questions of the day, including religious plurality, temperance, abolitionism, and prison reform. Certainly, Cheever's New England congregants would have recognized--and approved of--the biblical basis for his anti-slavery sentiments.
