Wright Brothers

Flown Grease Cup Used during Restoration of Wright brothers’ 1905 Wright Flyer III & Was Part of the Iconic Curtiss JN-4 "Jenny" & the De Havilland DH-4

Flown grease cup, approximately 1.25” at its widest part and 1.5” tall. Fine Condition.

The Curtiss JN-4 “Jenny" was a biplane - a fixed wing aircraft with two main wings stacked one above the other – produced by the Curtiss Aeroplane Company of Hammondsport, New York - a competitor with the Wright brothers’ company, the Wright Company. Although it was originally intended for the military, the “Jenny” found its real popularity in postwar America, as it became the “backbone of American postwar [civil aviation.”

The De Havilland DH-4 was a British two seat biplane that was designed by Geoffrey de Havilland for Airco, a British aircraft manufacturer. It was used as a day bomber during World War I, and flew from August 1916 through the end of the war.

In 1947, Orville Wright began overseeing the restoration of his 1905 aircraft. The process took three years, and the final product retained between 60 and 85 percent of its original material. Currently, the Wright Flyer III is on display in the Wright Brothers Aviation Center at Carillon Historical Park, in their hometown of Dayton.

This piece was originally obtained by Louis P. Christman for his work in the restoration of the 1905 Wright Flyer. The entire process took nineteen months, and though most pieces were from the plane itself, some other parts had to be machined to match the original pieces. This piece was obtained from a somewhat contemporary aircraft, to help the restored Flyer III maintain its authenticity.
