ALS, 4p, 8" 9.75"; Lindenwald; November 20, 1844 written to A. Danizar? Van Buren is writing in response to a request for assistance in obtaining a diplomatic post in the James Polk administration. Boldly signed by Van Buren as "M. Van Buren" The TLS is boldly signed in full by Coolidge as "Calvin Coolidge." The letter measures 7" x 9."

In part:

"You [illegible word] whilst representing the U. States in Holland very great capacity for that service, & with the exception of a temporary misunderstanding in regard to the state of your [illegible word] your conduct gave me the highest satisfaction that was fully explained upon your return to the U. States when it appeared that instead of being in arrear yourself, the U. States were largely indebted to you. The inconvenience to which you were exposed in consequence of this misapprehension, and the manly spirit with which you bore it, furnished additional claims to my favourable consideration, and it was my finest purpose to avail myself of any occasion that might present itself, to employ you in a service to which your talents are so well adapted & in which you could not fail to be highly useful to the country..."

Martin van Buren (1782-1862) was the eighth President of the United States, serving from 1837 to 1841. He was a lawyer, the first Vice President of the United States, and the ninth Governor of New York. He was a key organizer in the formation of the Democratic Party and was instrumental in Andrew Jackson's election and presidency. He was an advocate of states' rights, and his foreign policy included preserving neutrality in the Napoleonic Wars.

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
