Canton, Massachusetts, located in the central-eastern part of the state, is considered part of Greater Boston. Polling results from town residents in Spring 1812 show Governor of Massachusetts Elbridge Gerry (1744-1814), the Democratic-Republican incumbent, receiving 176 votes over Caleb Strong (1745-1819), the Federalist challenger, who received 50 votes. For Lieutenant Governor, Canton residents gave William King 177 votes over his opponent William Philips, Jr., who received 50 votes. In this way, the town of Canton voted for the two candidates who eventually lost the election: Elbridge Gerry and William King, both Democratic-Republicans.

Elbridge Gerry served only one term as Massachusetts Governor. He lost the closely contested race against Caleb Strong by only 1,300 votes. Statewide, Strong netted over 52,600 votes, or 50.6% of the vote; while sitting Governor Elbridge Gerry received 51,300 votes, representing 49.2% of the vote. Caleb Strong would go on to serve two terms, from June 1812 - May 1816.

Elbridge Gerry signed both the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation, but declined to sign the Constitution because it did not include a Bill of Rights. Gerry served as the 9th Governor of Massachusetts between June 1810 and June 1812. He was also Vice President during the Madison administration.
