Description:

Early Colonial & Revolutionary War Documents Including Convention Army Directive, 3 Pcs

Three early American documents, one undated and two dating ca. 1778, illustrating how war was waged in the British colonies. The material includes a conscription notice, receipt for mileage to Fort Ticonderoga, and a ledger tracking wartime service.

The lot includes, arranged chronologically:

1. A manuscript ledger comprising "An accound of Servises done in the war from April 1775 to March 1777," in which service is divided between "minute men" and "Symen" [seamen]. Eleven individuals' names are listed below, including four members of the Moore family. Expected folds and uneven edges. 8.375" x 5.625."

2. A handwritten unsigned letter written in Sudbury, Massachusetts on July 24, 1778 directing an unidentified soldier "to Serve as a Soldier: to Guard the Prisoners And Publick Stores untill the first of January Next unless Sooner Discharg'd: you are to Repair to Cambridge Imediatly with your Armes and accoutrements and there receive Orders from the Commanding officer." Minor loss to the left edge does not affect the legibility of the handwriting. Expected wear including water stains and chipped edges. 7.875" x 4.75."

The "Prisoners" referred to in this letter were nearly 6,000 British, Canadian, and German soldiers who had surrendered after the Patriot victory at the 1777 Battle of Saratoga, a group often referred to as the Convention Army (named after the terms of surrender, the Convention of Saratoga.) It took the prisoners almost a month to undertake the 200-mile-long journey from Saratoga to Cambridge, part of which entailed crossing both the Hudson River and the Berkshires. The prisoners were billeted in Cambridge for about one year until their release was arranged, but it's estimated that over 1 out of 6 prisoners escaped before that time.

3. An undated manuscript being "A True accompt of the money paid to Jona. Rice for Mileage for him and five Men from Ticonderoga for which Sum I have Recei'd his Receipt." Signed by Nathan Maynard, Joel Brigham, Israel Robins, John Marble, Jr., and Jonathan Piper verso. Weathering and isolated stains. 6.25" x 4.75."
