Description:

E. Manet's "Le Bon Bock" Photo Signed & Dedicated to C. Pissarro

A period art photograph of an original work by French Impressionist painter Edouard Manet (1832-1883), pencil signed and dedicated by Manet to the Danish-French artist Camille Pissarro (1830-1903), as, "à mon ami Pissarro / Ed. Manet" ["to my friend Pissarro / Ed. Manet."] N.d., n.p. Manet's signature and inscription appear on the original mat above the photo studio's blind-embossed seal at bottom, "Godet, Photographe / 6-8 R. Des Carrières / Des Batignolles / Paris." Both the sepia-toned photograph and the light blue mat show expected surface wear, including isolated wrinkles, scuffs, and ink stains recto and verso. Lightly pencil inscribed by a former collector in the lower right corner, and with minor edge loss in the lower left corner, else near fine. The sight size of the photograph is 6.25" x 7.25" while the overall size of the mat is 14" x 16.875."

The sepia-toned photograph taken by Parisian photographer Anatole Godet (1839-1887) shows Edouard Manet's 1873 oil on canvas "Le Bon Bock" (the original painting is now part of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.) In the original painting, as in the photograph, Manet has depicted a portly bearded gentleman with a furred cap holding a glass of thick, brown beer called bock in his left hand. Bock is a seasonal beer of German origin, brewed in the fall and consumed at springtime. This painting reflected Manet's interest in seventeenth-century Dutch portrait painters like Frans Hals.

Anatole Godet worked at the family photography studio located at 6-8, Rue des Carrières des Batignolles, in the 17th arrondissement of Paris, from about 1864-1887. Edouard Manet lived in the same Batignolles district, at 34, Boulevard des Batignolles, from about 1864-1866. Anatole Godet and his family specialized in art photography, and the bulk of their business in the last quarter of the nineteenth century consisted of producing official photographic reproductions of Manet's artwork.

Edouard Manet and Camille Pissarro were both artists who experimented with the artistic style known as Impressionism. Manet and Pissarro befriended, socialized, and worked with many of the most famous artists of the Impressionist school, such as Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Some art historians credit Manet's close friendship with Pissarro as serving as the catalyst for Pissarro's mid-career switch to the Impressionist style. Many of the Impressionists had previously belonged to Manet's artistic circle, the Batignolles Group (named after the same Parisian neighborhood), which convened between 1869-1875.
