Description:

Dwight Eisenhower 1952 TLS as 1st Allied Commander Europe

TLS, 1p, measuring 7.25" x 10.25", dated April 9, 1952, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe [Mons, Belgium]. Eisenhower sends thanks on personal letterhead, monogrammed "DDE", to one H. J. Dow for several paintings and landscape prints sent to him while overseas. Signed "Dwight D Eisenhower" at the conclusion during his time as the first Supreme Allied Commander Europe. Expected wear, including flattened letter folds and general toning throughout. Very good with boldly contrasted signature!

In part:
"Your letter, the two beautiful paintings, and the practically unlimited number of landscape prints you sent to me have all arrived safely. I have already started work on a copy of one of the prints… the abundance of material you have thus provided assumes me of many fine hours in front of an easel…"

Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969) was an American military officer and statesman who served as the 34th president of the United States from 1953 to 1961. He would assume the role of NATO'S first Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) in 1951 and, during his year-long tenure, would notably organize NATO's command structure and serve as the alliance's public persona in the midst of the Korean War. In turn, SACEUR is the second-highest military position within NATO, below only the Chair of the organization's Military Committee in terms of precedence.
