Description:

Dwight D. Eisenhower TLS On "Columbia University" Letterhead

A 1p typed letter signed by future 34th U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969), then in his role as 13th President of Columbia University, as "Dwight D Eisenhower" at lower right. Written in New York City on October 19, 1948, on cream watermarked bifold paper with blue embossed "Columbia University / in the City of New York / New York 27, N.Y. / President's Room" letterhead. Expected light wear including the central horizontal paper fold. The inner and outermost pages are blank. Near fine. 5.75" x 7.75."

Eisenhower wrote to Herbert Rosen, president of Broadcasting Program Service, in part: "For many months it has been my steadfast policy to decline appointments of all sorts unless I could actively participate in the work underway or contribute directly to the attainment of the proposed goal… I hope you will understand that this policy is dictated by the necessity of assuring myself the time and independence to concentrate on my primary job as President of Columbia University…"

Eisenhower had been appointed the 13th President of Columbia University in May 1948; he would helm the acclaimed Ivy League institution until January 1953. Eisenhower was committed to fostering a new type of American education, exemplified by that offered at Columbia, that prepared its citizens for life in a postwar world. Eisenhower's claim that he could not participate in Rosen's project, instead preserving his energies for his "primary job" as university president, was somewhat disingenuous, however. This was because Eisenhower was frequently absent from campus as a result of his increasing involvement in national politics and international affairs, most notably in 1950 when he served as the Supreme Commander of NATO. Eisenhower resigned from Columbia University to become the 34th U.S. President in January 1953.

Herbert Rosen was president of Broadcasting Program Service, a New York City communications firm which provided "Production, transcriptions, [and] foreign language programs," according to a 1948 radio directory. In 1946, Rosen had also become the president of International Media Corporation, an "international advertising and public relations firm" dealing in radio and television.
