Description:

Dr. Seuss Signed "The Cat In The Hat," 1st Ed., 1st Printing, With Dust Jacket

A first edition, first printing hardcover copy of Dr. Seuss's "The Cat in the Hat" (New York: Random House, 1957), signed and dedicated by Theodor Geisel (1904-1991), more widely known under his pseudonym Dr. Seuss, as "for Denise / Dr. Seuss" in his usual spot on the bottom left corner of the reverse of the front free endpaper. Accompanied by a James Spence Authentication Letter of Authenticity, submission number 225259, dated July 30, 2021. A small JSA sticker with the matching certification number can be found in the bottom right corner of the front free endpaper of the book.

The book is bound in the publisher's original unlaminated (matte) boards, in the correct dust jacket with the original price of "200/200" intact. There are four recommendations by contemporary educators and no mention of "Beginner Books" on the rear jacket cover, as is also consistent with first edition, first printing copies. The front inner binding of the book is split, the back inner binding is cracked but not split, and there is damage to the spine. Minor uneven toning found at the edges of the book covers. Inside, there is scattered foxing found on both sides of the front free endpaper, and there are a few isolated scuffs throughout. The dust jacket has a large c-shaped section missing from the front, and has expected chips, wrinkles, and stains. Overall good to very good. 61pp. 6.75" x 9.5." x .5."

Dr. Seuss's most famous literary creation was The Cat in the Hat, the title character of the eponymous 1957 children's book. Dr. Seuss had been tasked with reinvigorating children's interest in vocabulary building and basic reading by producing a more interesting alternative to tedious Dick and Jane type primers. The Cat in the Hat, a mischievous house guest who terrorizes two children on a rainy day, introduced many words of basic vocabulary into children's word banks under the guise of entertainment, not rote instruction.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
