Description:

Disraeli ALS to His Mother after his wedding "I am the happiest of men"

6pp, measuring 7" x 8.5", Tunbridge Wells, dated August 30, 1839. Signed by Disraeli as "D" and addressed to his mother following his wedding to Mary Anne Lewis. Mary Anne was the widow of Disraeli's colleague, Wyndham Lewis, and twelve years Disraeli's senior. The letter reads in part:

"…The ceremony was as brief as it was interesting. I was very nervous; Mary Anne more collected, & her graceful demeanor much admired as she blazed in a travelling dress of exotic brilliancy. But in truth she, like myself, had not slept a wink, & it is only this morning after a day of complete repose, that she has resumed her best health & spirit; I never saw her look so well, & she says she is the happiest of women, but I suppose that's a compliment. I am quite sincere however when I say I am the happiest of men…" The letter is accompanied by its original transmittal envelope. The letter has usual mail folds and light soiling. Very fine.

Mary Anne, upon her marriage to Disraeli, became 1st Viscountess Beaconsfield. A woman of wit and uninhibited humor, she used to joke, "Dizzy married me for my money. But, if he had the chance again, he would marry me for love." Although he had initially married her for her money (a sizeable income of £5,000 a year), the couple grew to care and respect one another during their marriage of over 30 years.
