Daniel Webster ALS: "I have no doubt that our own Laws require amendment..."

1p, measuring 7.75" x 9.75", Boston, Massachusetts, dated October 7, 1831. Signed "Danl Webster" and addressed to Silas M. Stilwell Esq. Webster responds to an inquiry from Stilwell on the topic of abolishing imprisonment for debt.

In full:

"I have recd your letter of Sept. 11. The subject to which it relates has become an interesting one, & has engaged the attention of the community here, as well as elsewhere. I have myself paid such attention to it, for some years, as various other duties and engagements would allow. I have no doubt that our own Laws require amendment. I thank you for the communications you have sent me, which I have not yet had leisure to peruse, since my return from an absence of some time; & it will give me pleasure and to hear from you further, at any time in relation to the progress of the desired measures." The letter has been mounted and framed, along with an engraving of Webster, to the overall size of 22" x 16.5". The engraving was done by W.G. Jackman and produced by N.Y. D. Appleton & Co. The letter has flattened mail folds and light soiling at the corners. Boldly signed.

Silas M. Stilwell, a New York State assemblyman, was best known for the Stilwell Act, which abolished imprisonment for debt and to punish fraudulent debtors. It was enacted in April 1831, six months before Webster answered his inquiry. Daniel Webster (1782-1852) was one of the most prominent lawyers of the 19th century and a statesman, who served as Secretary of State under Presidents William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, and Millard Fillmore. Between 1814 and 1852 he argued over 200 cases before the Supreme Court.
