Description:

Daniel Humphries Memorial Draft Attributed to John Trumbull (poet)

2pp, measuring 10" x 17.25", no place, no date. Written on verso of a broadside, a possible memorial draft titled "Life of David Humphreys", which is believed to have been written by American poet, John Trumbull (1750-1831), who was also a cousin of John Trumbull, the painter. After the Revolutionary War, Trumbull became a staunch Federalist and wrote with the "Hartford Wits," David Humphreys, Joel Barlow and Lemuel Hopkins. It is therefore likely that Trumbull would have been asked to write a memorial for his friend and co-worker, who passed in 1818. These manuscript notes are written on the blank verso of a broadside, and appear to be an early draft. Reading in part:

"DH was a younger son of the Revd Daniel Humphreys, Minister of the Congregl. Church of Derby in Connt. (Born 1753) After completing his course of Education at Yale College where he recd the degree of AB in 1771. Soon after the Commencement of the Revolutionary War, he entered the American Army & was successively an Aide de Camp to Genls Parsons, Greene, Putnam & after the year 1778 Washington. He continued with Wn to the close of the war & left the Army with the rank of Col. In 1784 he was appointed Secretary to Mr Jefferson, when after his return he was sent Ambassador to the Court of Portugal…At Lisbon in 1797 he married the Daughter of Sir John Bulkley, an accomplished young lady…with whom he received an ample fortune…In the last war with GBn commencing in 1812, that clas of the people in Connectt who from station officer or age were exempt from military duty, generally enrolled themselves in companies for the defense of the State and by the name of Veteran Volunteers. The Legislation appointed him Commander with the rank of a General. He died suddenly in 1818 & was interred in the cemetery of that city, where an elegant monument has been erected to his memory…" The opposite side of the manuscript is a printed broadside that outlines Hartford by-lays regarding the duty of town officers to protect the buildings from fire. Flattened folds with small separations and minor paper loss, affecting very little of the text. Uneven edges and chipping. Moderate toning and light soiling throughout.

Accompanied by an interesting and detailed document that appears to lay out Cavalry Training Maneuvers. 3pp, measuring 8" x 12.75", no place, no date. The document give commands to six separate divisions and give instruction for drills on "Pursuit on the Near Side: to be performed first in a walk and finally in speed" and "Attack and Defence in the Line." With flattened folds and uneven toning. Heavy damp staining to the center and at edges. Chipping and soiling to edges.

Trumbull entered Yale in 1763 and, while there, began writing satirical poetry, imitating the writing styles of several popular publications of the day. The poem for which he became best known was M'Fingal, a political satire. It begins with a "Town Meeting" in 1776, and ends with the Ghost of Continental Money representing the impact of the war.
