[Civil War] D. S. Decker 56th NY Regt. Archive, 4 Letters and Document

A group of four letters and a document, all Civil War dated, relating to an unexpected commission awarded to a D.S. Decker of the 56th New York Regiment, dating from February to March 1864. The printed document is a Company Return for the 56th New York for July 1863. The letters have flattened mail folds and varying degrees of light toning and soiling. The report is folded, with separations to some of the folds and chipping at the edges. Toned throughout, with minor soiling and foxing. Includes the following:

1. Autograph Letter Signed "M. Shelden", New York, dated February 12, 1864. Addressed to Col. Theodore Burr Gates, regarding the commission of D.S. Decker.
2. Letter Signed "D.S. Decker", Beauford, South Carolina, dated March 6, 1864. Addressed to Col. Theodore Burr Gates, regarding being commissioned as Captain in the 20th New York State Militia.
3. Letter Signed "D.S. Decker", Beauford, South Carolina, dated March 17, 1864. Addressed to Col. Theodore Burr Gates, regarding being commissioned as Captain in the 20th New York State Militia.
4. Letter Signed "D.S. Decker", Beauford, South Carolina, dated March 24, 1864. Addressed to Col. Theodore Burr Gates, stating his refusal to be mustered as Captain in the 20th New York State Militia.
5. Company Return for the 56th New York, by Captain Eliphes Smith and Colonel Charles H Van Hyck. Dated July 1863, while the unit was stationed at Folly Island, South Carolina. Recording those present, absent, and enlisted men on "extra" duty. Also included are alterations and memoranda.

Demon S. Decker enlisted in the Union Army as a First Sergeant on August 16, 1861, and was mustered into Company F of the NY 56th Infantry. He was promoted to Second Lieutenant in February 1862, and again to First Lieutenant in October of the same year. He left the army the month after these letters were written, being dismissed from military service on April 11, 1864. Lt. Colonel Theodore Burr Gates (1825-1911) was a staff officer with the 20th New York State Militia and was elected as the Regiment's Lieutenant Colonel in June 1861. He saw action at Turner's Cap, Second Bull Run, and Gettysburg (where the regiment was noted for their defense against Pickett's Charge). He mustered out in November 1864 and was brevetted to Brigadier General of Volunteers.

In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.
