Nation Carrie

Carrie Nation Postcard Dating from "Hachetation" Period

Double-sided postcard inscribed overall and signed by American temperance activist Carrie A. Nation (1846-1911) as "C.N." verso. Written on September 28, 1908 and postmarked from Okemah, Oklahoma the same day. Bearing a cancelled 1 cent green Benjamin Franklin stamp and addressed to "Miss Belle Gillham / 1708 N. Taylor, ave. / St Louis. mo." In near fine condition with minor expected wear to corners, measuring 5.5" x 3.5."

On the front, a colored print of Okemah's Public School, circa 1900, shows students posing in front of a brick edifice. On the back, Carrie Nation inscribed in pencil: "Hello Belle, how are you all this am we Stayed over Sun - here will leave hear for 'Paden' today. met old friend here. + had a fine time. will get to Paden to day as it is only 20. mile. Love, C.N." Transcript is with untouched spelling errors.

This correspondence dates from Carrie Nation's "Hatchetation" period. Between 1900-1910, Nation and fiery temperance acolytes destroyed bars and taverns across the Midwest. Nation was arrested an estimated 30 times during this period; she often posted bail with money collected during lecture tours and through the sale of photographs and souvenir miniature hatchets. In 1905, the recently divorced Nation had moved to Guthrie, Oklahoma Territory. Both destinations mentioned here, Okemah and Paden, were over 90 miles away from her home, so it is likely that this postcard was written while on the road. Could Nation have conducted a "hatchetation" on this very trip?

Carrie Nation was a hotelkeeper and minister's wife when she first became involved in the temperance movement. At first, Nation protested non-violently, using tactics such as hymn-singing at beerhouses. Yet after 1900, Nation preferred more destructive methods involving her famous ax. During her career, Nation also published several newspapers and lobbied for women's rights.
