Description:

Carolyn Cassady Pair of TLS & Envelope with Kerouac Content

A pair of typed letters signed by author Carolyn Cassady. Both are signed "Carolyn Cassady" in black ink. The first, 1p, measuring 8.25" x 11", Los Gatos, California, dated January 2, 1978, is addressed to Richard Aaron in Switzerland. She writes of writing a "semi-biography of my late husband, Neal Cassady, describing the twenty years of our marriage and our close friendship with Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Ken Kesey and others…" The second letter, 1p, measuring 8.25" x 11.5", London, dated June 8, 1992, is addressed to Richard Marcel and is accompanied by its original hand-addressed envelope. Cassady discusses the collection and sale of the Kerouac archives writing, "Your telling me $4000 is cheap for a Kerouac letter was not received with great joy and celebration by moi in that Neal sold all our collection…in the early fifties. I think we ended up with about $1200 for the lot -- around 500 pages…" The accompanying AirMail envelope has Cassady's return address sticker on the verso and is postmarked on the same date as the letter. Both letters have flattened mail folds and bold signatures. One letter has toning and tears to two of the edges. Overall very good.

Carolyn Cassady (1923-2013) was an American writer associated with the Beat Generation through her marriage to Neal Cassady. She met Cassady, Kerouac, and Ginsberg in March 1947, and married Neal on April 1, 1948. In December of that year, Neal spent their savings on a new car and set out on a road trip with friends Al Kinkle, Lu Anne, and Kerouac. Carolyn, believing that her husband had deserted her and their infant daughter, told Neal not to return home; this story would later be immortalized in Kerouac's "On the Road." Carolyn would go on to become a frequent character in the works of Jack Kerouac.
