Description:

Benjamin Disraeli 4p ALS "The Bishop of Oxford comes to me..." Stellar

4pp of a bifolium, 4.5" x 7.125", "Hughdenden Manor" Buckinghamshire, England, dated October 24, 1862. Boldly signed "BDisraeli" and addressed to Spencer Walpole. Disraeli requests that Walpole acts as a companion to the Bishop of Oxford. The letter reads in full:

"The Bishop of Oxford comes to me on Wednesday, the 29th next: I stay over the following Thursday. It will give me very great pleasure, indeed, if you will be his companion during his visit. I much regret that I am obliged to offer you, on this occasion, only a bachelors invitation, but it is necessary that I shd. ask some County families to meet the Bishop, & we could not, therefore, receive Mrs. $ Miss Walpole befittingly. We hope, however, that their visit to Hughenden is only a gratification postponed to us & perhaps to a more alluring season. Mrs. Disraeli unites with me in kind remembrances to Mrs. Walpole & yr hearth." With flattened mail folds and light uneven toning. There is a small hole through all pages at the top fold, affects very little of the text. Boldly signed.

Sir Spencer Walpole (1839-1907) was an English historian and civil servant, distantly related to the first prime minister, Robert Walpole. The bishop referred to in the letter was Samuel Wilberforce (1805-1873), English bishop of the Church of England and third son of William Wilberforce. He famously opposed Darwin's theory of evolution.
