Description:

Saratoga Campaign

Early nineteenth-century map depicting "Plan of the Position taken by Genl. Burgoyne on the 10th of Octr. 1777 in which the British Army was Invested by the Americans under the Command of Genl. Gates and Surrendered to him on the 16th of October the same year". Based on an original sketch by an American officer that was drafted by Isaac A. Chapman, engraved by Gideon Fairman, and then published by Moses Thomas in Analectic Magazine circa 1818. Cream-colored paper sheet measuring 16.75” w. x 11.125” in very good condition, with overall toning, isolated foxing, and some reverse impressions. With expected paper folds, some well-worn, professionally restored verso, or partly torn or brittle.

The map is typographical, showing important nearby natural landmarks like "Hudson's River", Fishkill Creek, and Batten Kill. It also illustrates military positions of both the Continental and British Armies between September 13 and October 16, 1777. Specific fighting units of American, Canadian, British, and German forces are illustrated in relation to old fort ruins, headquarters, barracks, and roads to Albany and Fort Miller. The following commanders' forces are also mapped: Continental Generals Gates, Fellows, Nixon, and Colonel Morgan; as well as Prussian leaders Specht, Riedesel, and Hanau.

The Battle of Saratoga, which was really a series of battles fought between September 19 and October 10, 1777, was a major Continental military victory. General Burgoyne's British forces surrendered to Continental forces that outnumbered them two to one. The victory legitimized the Revolutionary cause, thereby securing sources of foreign aid.

Analectic Magazine was a short-lived yet ambitious Philadelphia publication that operated between 1813-1820. It served as an arts and cultural journal that drew most of its material from European sources.

A splendid early nineteenth-century map documenting one of the most important battles of the Revolutionary War!
