Apollo XI Signed by Armstrong, Aldrin & Collins, Similar to Insurance Covers, From William Whipkey Collection

A NASA Manned Spacecraft Center Stamp Club Official Commemorative Cover, "First Manned Lunar Exploration", signed by all three Apollo XI crew members: Commander Neil Armstrong (1930-2012) as "Neil Armstrong" at center bottom; Command Module Pilot Michael Collins (born 1930) as "Michael Collins" at bottom right; and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, Jr. (born 1930) as "Buzz Aldrin" at center right. Ex William "Bill" Whipkey Collection. Whipkey managed the NASA machine shop during the Apollo era, salvaging aeronautical equipment and other space relics slated for destruction.

With a brilliant color cachet depicting an artist's imagining of the moon's surface. Bearing an Apollo 11 10¢ "First Man on the Moon" stamp, and postmarked from Moon Landing, U.S.A. on July 20, 1969 and from Washington, D.C. on September 9, 1969. Addressed to Whipkey's relative Patricia in Friendswood, Texas. Uneven toning verso. Isolated mounting traces verso mentioned just for accuracy, else near fine. 6.5" x 3.625".

While this has the same art as a Type 1 insurance cover, we do not believe that it is. The postmark is in a different spot and it was obviously in the possession of someone who mailed it for a second postmark less than two months after the mission.

Technically, an insurance cover had to source from one of the three astronaut families, and most have initials and numbering on the upper left or back. Some covers were held by the families as "insurance covers," and the rest were given the NASA workers, etc. We believe this one falls into the latter category. An official Insurance cover can bring upwards of $10,000, so here is an affordable version.
