Description:

"Andy Warhol: Portraits of the 70s" Signed 1st Ed. w/ Heart Drawing

A signed copy of "Andy Warhol: Portraits of the 70s" by Andy Warhol and Robert Rosenblum (New York: Random House, 1979. 141pp.) printed in conjunction with an exhibit of the same name held at the Whitney Museum. Boldly signed on half title page "To Herman[?] love Andy Warhol" with a large drawn heart underneath. Portraits featured in both the book and exhibit include iconic subjects such as Mick Jagger, Liza Minelli, Yves St. Laurent, and Truman Capote. All are shown side by side on either page in differing color schemes. Gilt paper boards with matching gold lettering to black cloth spine and original dust jack maintained, housed within a protective sleeve. Some bleeding through to verso and full title page from Warhol's pen, with expected wear to cover including rubbing and bumping. A very good example overall.

Andy Warhol's "Portraits of the 70s" marked his second major exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art between 1979 and 1980. The portrait style seen throughout this series saw a notable shift in the artist's embracing of abstract expressionism, used to make his subjects look smeared, if not garish or grotesque. While not featured among the portraits in the book, the highlight of the exhibition came in the form of three giant versions of Warhol's "Mao Zedong", housed in a separate chapel-like pavilion in the main space.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
