Description:

Andrew Jackson Signed Alabama Land Deed

A land deed signed by 7th U.S. President Andrew Jackson (1767-1845) as "Andrew Jackson" at lower right. Recorded at Washington, D.C. on May 10, 1831. The document, which is partly printed and partly handwritten on a single vellum sheet measuring (sight size) 15.5" x 9.25," was also signed at lower center by Elijah Hayward, Commissioner of the United States General Land Office between 1830-1835. Bearing a beautifully intact embossed United States General Land Office seal at lower left. In very good to near fine condition, with expected light folds, scattered foxing and stains, and a small area of loss at the center. Jackson's signature is large and bold, measuring 6" x 1" alone. Matted and displayed behind glass, to the right of an engraving of Jackson after an original portrait by Alonzo Chappel, and above two engraved plaques. Not examined out of the frame. The overall frame size measures 31.625" x 18" x .875."

Certificate No. 2322 granted 160 acres and 26/100ths of an acre of land to William Baker (1775-1861) of Madison County, Alabama.

"Whereas William Baker of Madison County, Alabama has deposited in the General Land Office of the United States, a certificate of the Register of the Land Office at Huntsville, whereby it appears that full payment has been made by the said William Baker … for the North East quarter of Section One, in Township two, of Range two, East, in the District of land subject to sale at Huntsville, Alabama containing one hundred and sixty acres and twenty six hundredths of an acre…"

The U.S. Department of Interior Bureau of Land Management General Land Office Records includes this May 10, 1831 land deed for William Baker. (Baker also applied, either alone or with partners, for two additional tracts of 40 acres each in Madison and Jackson Counties in 1852 and 1854.) Evidence suggests the lands later became part of a large plantation.

Alabama joined the Union in 1819.
