Description:

Allen Ginsberg PSA MINT 9 Signed Envelope Re: Soviet Poet & American Songwriter

An envelope cover signed and inscribed by experimental poet Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997), as "Allen Ginsberg / Andrei Vosnesensky [sic] / Public Theater Management / Admit Steven Taylor." N.d., n.p. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA certified and graded MINT 9. Five letters of Ginsberg's inscription are slightly smeared, but still legible. Expected wear and weathering to the envelope, else near fine. The envelope measures 9.375" x 4.125" while the slab measures 12.375" x 5.5."

Ginsberg's signed and inscribed envelope refers to two of his close friends and creative collaborators: Soviet-era poet Andrei Voznesensky (1933-2010) and American songwriter and musician Steven Taylor. In many ways, Voznesensky was Ginsberg's Soviet equivalent: a boundary-pushing (and sometimes violating) poet fully committed to his craft as well as to the cultural movement it was a part of. Ginsberg had first met Voznesensky, or "Voz," during the latter's visit to the United States in the 1960s, and the two remained close until Ginsberg's death. Steven Taylor, a guitarist and poet himself, toured with Ginsberg after 1986. Voznesensky frequently gave poetry performances, so it is likely that Ginsberg requested free admission for his friend to one such Voznesensky recitation at the "Public Theater."

Allen Ginsberg, author of "Howl and Other Poems" published in 1956, was one of the leading intellectuals of the 1950s Beat Generation that also included Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs, and Gregory Corso.
