Description:

Einstein Albert

Albert Einstein TLS, Probably Related to the Stokes-Einstein Equation

Single page typed letter signed on letterhead of "The Institute For Advanced Study", 8.5" x 10.5". Dated "February 29, 1953" (leap year), and signed by Albert Einstein as "A. Einstein". Fine condition with expected folds. Accompanied by Einstein's original mailing envelope, postmarked "Feb 29, 1952", 9.25" x 4". And includes a worn page of scientific mathematical notes, penned in another hand, which discusses serums, Red blood cells, viscosity and protein via equations, 7.5" x 11.5".

A lovely letter by Einstein granting permission to Dr. Walter de Francois, to be quoted from a letter Einstein wrote to Dr. Roland Pritikin in 1935. Although the connection between Einstein and Dr. Walter de Francois is unclear, the scientific notes which accompany the letter suggest that Dr. de Francois may have had active research in analysis of Red Blood Cell Volume, Viscosity of Protein, Viscosity of serum and Viscosity of Water dispersion media. Although on the surface this may appear to have little to do with physics, apparently The effects of nonionic polymers on human red blood cell (RBC) aggregation, and the hydroynamic radius (Rh) of individual samples of dextran, polyvinylpyrrolidone, and polyoxyethylene over a range of molecular weights (1500–2,000,000) were calculated from their intrinsic viscosities using the Einstein viscosity relation and directly measured by quasi-elastic light scattering, and the effect of each polymer sample on RBC aggregation was studied by nephelometry and low-shear viscometry.  The scattering is related to the hydrodynamic radius (Rh), as in the Stokes–Einstein equation. Particles of different size and aggregation status are recognized by their increasing Rh value. Thus there may have been a direct correlation between the studies conducted by Dr. Walter de Francois and Einstein's viscosity relation measured by light scattering.

The extended and applied uses for Einstein's theories are boundless. This lovely set includes a fantastic signature by Albert Einstein.
