Albert Einstein Signs a Hebrew College Guestbook During His Only Trip to Cuba

Albert Einstein (1879-1955). A sheet from the guestbook of Hebrew College in Havana, "Registro De Visitantes", 1p recto and verso, 9" x 11.875", December 19, 1930, signed during Einstein's brief two day visit to Cuba, the only time he visited the country. Einstein was an early proponent of Jewish universities, knowing that Jews were often excluded from institutions of higher learning. This page is a fine and very early example of such support, with Einstein's handwritten portion reading in full, "Dec. 19 30 A. Einstein Berlin". Two punch holes at left for filing. Flattened intersecting folds; rust impressions from previous paper clips; a few tiny circular holes; some small edge tears; creasing; and foxing; else, in very good condition.

Other entries on the sheet include well-known dignitaries and Zionists of the early 20th century, including: Dr. Abraham Coralnik, editor of The Day newspaper; Emanuel Celler, the longest serving Congressman in New York State history; Morris Fishman, Vice President of the Detroit Life Insurance Co. and spokesperson for United Jewish Campaign; Nathan Borin of Borin Brothers Co.; Rabbi Louis J. Victor Eppstein; Rabbi I. Edward Kiev, Head Librarian, Hebrew Union College; Oscar Lopez; Simon Eisenberg; Herman Chervony, board member of Centro Israelita de Cuba; Oscar Gutierrez; and Franco Goires.
