Description:

Abraham Lincoln's Springfield House Decorated in Mourning, Showing Old Bob

A vintage carte de visite showing the former home of 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) at 426 S. 7th Street in Springfield, Illinois festooned in mourning decorations prior to Lincoln's funeral procession to Oak Ridge Cemetery. N.d. but ca. May 4, 1865, the day Lincoln was buried. The sepia-colored albumen print is mounted on a cream card lacking a backstamp or any other copyright information. Slightly unevenly trimmed, else near fine, 4" x 2.5."

Lincoln and his family lived at this house in Springfield from 1844-1861. The Lucian Tilton family, who had been renting the house at the time of Lincoln's assassination, decorated its façade with a simple black bunting after hearing the horrible news. A few days later, the city of Springfield redecorated the house more elaborately, as it is seen in this view. Approximately 350 municipal workers spent ten days decorating Springfield's principal landmarks, including the State House and the former Lincoln home, with black velvet, white fabric, silver lace, and fringe in advance of the arrival of the presidential funeral train.

The horse garbed in black seen in the foreground is Old Bob (also known as Old Robin), the horse Lincoln had kept during his days as a circuit lawyer. Lincoln had sold Old Bob to a drayman around 1860, and the horse had since retired, but the city brought him out to commemorate special events during the Civil War, such as the surrender of Richmond. Old Bob, led by Reverend Henry Brown, followed the president's funeral cortege through the city of Springfield en route to the cemetery.
