Abraham Lincoln CDV

A carte de visite depicting 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), as "Photographed by Richard Walzl." The illustration after a photograph by Mathew Brady is sepia-colored, and shows a bust-length portrait of Lincoln at 3/4 profile facing left. Mounted to a cream-colored stock card printed verso: "Government Tax paid to the Assistant Assessor. / R.W." Light toning and expected surface wear including a smudge near the bottom. Isolated foxing verso, else near fine. 2.375" x 4."

Abraham Lincoln served as president between 1861 and his assassination in April 1865. It is possible that this Richard Walzl carte de visite was produced in the wake of Lincoln's death, during the development of a brisk industry of selling posthumous photographs, commemorative items, and other souvenirs.

Richard Walzl (1843-1899) was an Austrian immigrant whose family settled in Baltimore, Maryland. Walzl and his brothers became involved in all aspects of the photography business, from offering portrait sittings to providing photography supplies. Richard Walzl became active after 1860. He shut down his brick and mortar photography studio during the Civil War in order to serve as an itinerant field photographer. Walzl photographed many sites in and around Washington, D.C. during the Civil War era, including Lincoln's summer cottage in Washington County in modern-day Washington, D.C.
