New York City businessman, and one of America's premier Lincoln collectors. Frederick Hill Meserve began collecting in 1880, when he set out to find photographs to illustrate the Civil War diary his father was writing. When he bought a packet of photographs at auction for $1.10 that included 100 Mathew Brady salted paper prints, he was hooked. By 1911, he had tracked down and catalogued 100 Lincoln photographs. The photographs document the changes in Lincoln's face over the years, as he struggled with the tragedy of the Civil War and the death of his son. The photographs were collected in an album that was prepared by Meserve and Carl Sandburg for the creation of "The Photographs of Abraham Lincoln," published in 1944. Meserve died in 1962, and his extensive collection of original photographs, amassed with the help of his daughter, Dorothy Meserve Kunhardt, was purchased by the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Yale University in 2015.

Mathew B. Brady was one of the earliest photographers in American history, best known for his scenes of the Civil War. He studied under inventor Samuel F. B. Morse, who pioneered the daguerreotype technique in America
