Description:

7 Early Massachusetts Docs Related to Deerfield

A group of seven documents relating to Deerfield, Massachusetts and its surrounding communities, ca. 1766-1784. The majority of the documents record land sale transactions, with one involving acquiring a share in a saw mill. All of the documents are signed, either by the interested parties or municipal functionaries, and some bear seals. Many include dockets or memoranda verso. Please see our terms and conditions for large lots, and refer to catalog photos for additional information about condition. Expected paper flaws commensurate with age including toning, foxing, folds, isolated separation, splits, repairs, and tape residue. Six of the seven documents have been lightly encapsulated in Mylar plastic to better preserve them. Overall good to very good condition. The largest document measures 10" x 15."

The single factor uniting all of the documents is the town of Deerfield, Massachusetts; either the buyers or sellers in each case were town residents. Deerfield was made infamous following the 1704 raid by French and indigenous forces during Queen Anne's War. Other neighboring towns represented in the archive include Conway, Ashfield, Shelburne, and Montague, Massachusetts.

The archive includes, in chronological order:

1. A 1p manuscript document, June 15, 1765, n.p. Elijah Wells of Deerfield sold Jaazaniah Howe of Deerfield 1/4 part of a saw mill in exchange for 11 pounds.

2. A 1p partly printed and partly manuscript document, June 30, 1766, n.p. Samuel Belding of Ashfield sold Jonathan Wells of Deerfield a 76-acre tract of land for 33 pounds.

3. A 1p partly printed and partly manuscript document, June 11, 1767, n.p. Nathaniel Hawks of Deerfield sold Ebenezer Bardwell of Deerfield a parcel of land for 4 pounds, 13 shillings.

6. A 1p manuscript document, August 27, 1781, n.p. Samuel Lamon of Deerfield sold Solomon Clap, Philip Harvey, and Zebediah Allies of Montague 44 acres of land for 130 pounds. Other transactions between the four men, in both "Lawfull Silver Money" and "Spanish Milled Dollars," are also recorded in the same document.
