5 Civil War General Orders, Incl. 1 Issued 3 Days After Lincoln's Assassination

An assortment of five Civil War-era General Orders printed and issued from the War Department in Washington, D.C. between April 17 - November 7, 1865. The earliest example was circulated just three days after the assassination of 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865); the latest six months after the formal surrender of the Confederate States of America and the end of the Civil War. All of the General Orders are double hole-punched along the left side. Expected gentle wear including light toning and scattered foxing, else near fine. Average size 5" x 7.25."

1. General Orders, No. 70, issued on April 17, 1865, concerning the expansion of U.S. military lines to encompass areas formerly designated as enemy territory, including Virginia. 1p. Uneven left edge.

2. General Orders, No. 128, issued on July 21, 1865, regarding recent Military Academy appointments to various U.S. Army sectors. 6pp. Signed by Acting Assistant Adjutant General at back. Docketed along the bottom of the first page.

3. General Orders, No. 132, issued on August 17, 1865, relating to the use of army supplies for field officers' personal use. 3pp. Signed by Acting Assistant Adjutant General below.

4. General Orders, No. 137, issued on August 31, 1865, concerning removing wartime trade restrictions affecting Key West, Galveston, and regions on both sides of the Mississippi River. Some of the presidential proclamations contained in this group predate Lincoln's assassination. 10pp. Docketed along the bottom of the first page.

5. General Orders, No. 160, issued on November 7, 1865, regarding the surrender of confiscated Confederate naval property to the proper authority. 1p. Signed by Acting Assistant Adjutant General below.
