Description:

27 Images Capturing Moro Rebellion During Philippine-American War, 1902-3

An archive of twenty-seven photographs, all measuring approximately 3.25" x 3.25", Philippines, ca. 1902/3. A group of images captured by amateur photographer, Chaplain George D. Rice, who was serving with the 27th Infantry Regiment. Dating from 1902 to 1903, in places such as Lake Lanao and other areas of the Philippines, Rice's photographs capture candid moments of soldiers, villagers and children, animals, fishing excursions, army barracks, and even a sultan. All dating from the Moro Rebellion when the Muslim natives of Southern Philippines fought against the U.S. military. There are a few duplicates of images, but all are fascinating to study. Some with pencil captions or notations on verso. One photograph has been captioned and copyrighted as "On the walls of Fort Bacolod, five minutes after the charge April 8, 1903. Copyrighted 1903. Chaplain Rice 27th Infy." Some silvering and age toning to images, or other expected discolorations. Chipping at edges with some loss. Some images have stamps on verso. A very good collection.

Chaplain George D. Rice (1861-1936) was born in Brighton, Massachusetts and educated at Tufts College. He enlisted as a chaplain of the 6th Massachusetts Volunteers in the Spanish-American War in 1898, and was later appointed a first lieutenant in the 26th Regiment, United States Volunteers, organized to serve in the Philippine Islands. He then served in the 27th Infantry Regiment, one of the ten new Regular Army regiments authorized for the Philippine-American War. At the Battle of Bayan (May 2, 1902) Rice worked ministering to the sick and wounded. Rice was also a keen photographer, and with his Kodak Brownie camera, he documented the assault on the cotta of the Sultan of Bacolod on April 6, 1903, known as the Battle of Bacolod. He would later turn these images into a souvenir booklet for sale at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair.

The Moro Rebellion (1899-1913) occurred during the Philippine-American War, resulting from the U.S. breaking the Kiram-Bates Treaty and the invasion of Moroland. One man who made a name for himself during the war was then-Captain John J. Pershing, who led the March Around Lake Lanao and included the Battle of Bacolod and the First Battle of Taraka. Pershing was a diplomatic and thoughtful leader who, on February 10, 1903, was declared a Datu (a title used for native royalty) - the only American to be so honored.
