2 Interesting Foreign Docs: Napoleon's Uncle French LS & Brazilian President DS
Archive
A pair of interesting foreign language documents, one a letter in French signed by Napoleon Bonaparte's half-uncle, Joseph Fesch; and one a partly printed partly manuscript document in Portuguese signed by the 3rd President of the Republic of Brazil, Prudente de Morais. Expected wear, else near fine. The French document has been fully translated while the Portuguese document has just been summarized.

The lot consists of:

1. A 1p letter in French signed by Joseph Fesch (1763-1839), half-uncle of French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, as "J. Card: fesch" at center. June 25, 1811. Paris, France. Beautifully secretarially inscribed on watermarked laid paper. Expected flattened transmittal folds and isolated mounting traces along the top edge. Else near fine. 8" x 12.5." Accompanied by an English translation; a color postcard of Fesch after a portrait by Charles Meynier; and a biographic label.

Fesch addressed this letter to "His Excellency Monsieur Count Aldini, Minister of the Realm of Italy," almost certainly referring to Antonio Aldini (1755-1826), a prominent Napoleonic official. Fesch's objectives in writing the letter were two-fold; first, it served as a recommendation letter testifying to the excellent character of the involved parties; and second, it exhorted Aldini to help them using his influence with the "Prince Viceroy, or even with the Emperor." Fesch was lobbying on behalf of "Madame la Baronne de Friess," whose husband was a former Chevalier of St. Louis, member of the Order of the Iron Crown, brigadier general, and commander of French forces in Veneto, in northern Italy.

2. A 1p partly printed and partly manuscript document in Portuguese signed by the 3rd President of Brazil Prudente de Morais (1841-1902), as "Prudente de Morais Barros" at lower right; and counter-signed by Carlos Augusto de Carvalho (1851-1905), who served as Foreign Minister in the Brazilian Republic in the 1890s, as "Carlos Aug.to de Carvahlo" below the president's signature. December 16, 1895. Rio de Janiero, Republic of Brazil. Partly printed and partly manuscript on watermarked paper. Bearing an official hand-stamp in purple ink near the signatures. Expected wear including flattened transmittal folds, with some tiny breaks along the folds. Folded measures 6.125" x 9" while unfolded measures 22.25" x 18" overall. Ex-International Autograph Auctions, Europe, March 16, 2023 sale.

The document confirmed the appointment of Julio Bombiero de Kremenac as Austro-Hungarian Consul at Rio de Janiero.
