Description:

1865 New York Map, "The Topography and Hydrology of New York," With Pull-Out Map Over 5 Feet Long! "The most enduring nineteenth century map of Manhattan"

New York: Robert Craighead, 1865. First edition thus. Publisher's purple gilt stamped cloth rebacked with a new spine and the original cloth laid back down. Thirteen pages of text, with a enormous Hand-colored lithographed folding map, the "Topographical Map of the City of New York Showing Original Water Courses and Made Land". The map is approximately 19.5 x 63 inches (50 x 160 cm); the text 9 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches (23.5 x 14 cm). See below for further condition details.

*Please note that another similar copy sold at auction several years ago for over $11,000, and that copy had a heavily restored map to the extent that the map was fully dissected into many squares and then laid back down with a linen backing.  The map present in our copy has only slight restoration along a fold line, and another intact tear along the upper right and is in superb condition. To learn more about the map see this video of the Doyle example https://www.facebook.com/DoyleNewYork/videos/1024763934582661

The Title page of the book has the ownership name and address of James Ludlow, a Harvard graduate attorney in New York City circa 1900. His ownership name and address appear again at the back of the text block. In addition, both the map, and the book's end papers bear the stamp of his law firm "Please return to Ludlow & Townsend, 45 Cedar Street, New York". The text block is stitched in and the binding is quite firm with only the top section pulled away from the binding.

The map is produced on thin paper now imperceptibly reinforced with Japon paper, and has superb appearance with strong vibrant colors being bright overall with but minor conservation including  along a fold line affecting the lower area at the location of the letter "v" in "East River".

"The most enduring nineteenth century map of Manhattan" ( Manhattan in Maps ). The current map is a great expansion of Viele's original plan of Central Park and was issued at a time of great concern over sanitation and disease in the city. The map has found great utility in the decades that followed including being referenced at the time of the building of the Empire State Building and also United Nations Plaza.
