Description:

Yasser Arafat Signed "Jewish World" Newspaper Featuring PLO Cover Story

An interesting lot related to Nobel Peace Prize-winning Palestinian politician Yasser Arafat (1929-2004), comprised of an issue of "Jewish World," an American weekly newspaper, signed by Arafat; in addition to a typed letter signed issued by Arafat's Tunisia office.

The lot includes:

1. An issue of the short-lived American weekly newspaper "Jewish World," (Vol. 7, Number 48, November 25 - December 1, 1988), signed by Arafat as "Y. Arafat" in red pen on the front cover. The cover depicts a cartoon of a jovial Arafat giving the peace sign superimposed above the Palestinian flag. Expected light wear including age toning. The top edge of the newspaper is slightly chipped, and there is a remnant of tape found in the lower left corner of the front cover as well as an abrasion located a little higher up. Else very good to near fine. 11.25" x 14.5."

The cover story exploring Arafat's influence in the Middle East is entitled "Birth of a Nation, Directed by Yasir [sic] Arafat." The 71pp newspaper features several articles including Walter Ruby's interview with "PLO chief ideologist Khaled el-Hassan" on page 12.

The "Jewish World" was published in West Palm Beach, Florida between 1986-1989.

2. A 1p typed letter signed by Dr. Sami Musallam (born 1947) as "Sami Musallam" near the bottom. Written in Tunis, Tunisia on May 25, 1989 on bilingual English and Arabic "State of Palestine / Palestine Liberation Organization / President Office" letterhead. Near fine. 8.125" x 10.75."

Dr. Musallam, who served as Director of the Office of President Yasser Arafat's Office in Tunis between 1979-1995, wrote autograph seeker Ted Knee of Boca Raton, Florida, in part: "I would like to assure you that the Palestinian people led by their sole legitimate representative the PLO, will continue their just struggle to achieve peace and to live in peace, as well as to regain their inalienable national rights including their right to return, to self-determination and to establish their independent state."

Yasser Arafat emerged as a major political figure in the mid-twentieth-century Middle East. A co-founder of the Fatah political party, Arafat served as Chairman or President of the Palestinian Liberation Organization, or PLO, between 1969-2004. He was co-awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994.
