WWII USS Salamaua World War News Reports, Jan. 8-13, 1945

13pp, measuring 8" x 13", USS Salamaua [no place], dated January 8-13, 1945. Typed reports of Pacific, European, and American War News, including details on bombings on Japanese bases, engagements on the Western Front, political goings on in Washington, D.C., and even gossip from Hollywood. The following are excerpts from the reports:

January 8, 1945: "Pacific War News: Admiral Nimitz revealed the score of the Wednesday and Thursday carrier attacks on Formosa and Okinawa Island, and told of three new Naval bombardments. Blows fell on every important Jap base between the Philippines and Japan itself…European War News: On the Western Front, the American attack against the northern flank of the German bulge in Belgium gained almost a mile in area south of Stavelot…The Third Army on the southern flank of the German Salient gained two miles in North Luxembourg, east of Bastogne."

January 11, 1945: "London: The Soviet forces maintained the tempo of their assault on the surrounded garrison in the capital. The Russian communique broadcast from Moscow reported capture of another 250 blocks of buildings. The Soviet forces now are in control of approximately half of Budapest…Washington: Representative May, Kentucky Democrat, introduced a bill to require all registered nurses eighteen to forty five to register for a draft…Hollywood: Judy Garland and her director, Vincente Minnelli, plan to marry next fall."

January 12, 1945: "European War News: Allied troops gained on all three sides of the German bulge in Belgium, as the Germans began withdrawing their troops there, strewing thousands of mines behind them…Washington: President Roosevelt presented the Medal of Honor to give Army and two Navy men at a mass ceremony at the White House. It was the largest number ever to get the nation's highest award for valor from the President at one time."

January 13, 1945: "Undated Pacific War: Admiral Nimitz reported that American carrier forces were attacking the Japs on the French Indo-China coast. He said the attack was centered between Saigon and Cam Ranh Bay…European War News: The U.S. Third Army made a surprise attack that sent thousands of Nazis back into the woods along the Luxembourg front. The Allied forces in Belgium smashed out small gains against the diminishing bulge in that sector. The neck of the bulge has been narrowed to two miles in width."

The news reports are accompanied by two "Plan of Day" Memos, measuring 8" x 10.5", from the USS Salamaua, dated January 14 and 15, 1945. A typed schedule for the crew of the ship, including the appropriate uniform of the day, times of meals and work, as well as any notes from Command. All of the documents have flattened folds and light toning to all. Varying degrees of soiling, with the Plan of the Day dated January 14, 1945 being heavily soiled. Additional tears and paper loss to this sheet. Others are very fine.
